The DXpedition will now be from two different locations – 4 weeks at each. The new QTH for the second half of the DXpedition may not have internet access, but we’ll know more about this when we get to Niue. This second QTH is the cliff-top location used in September 2011 by Steven ZK2AB, so should give good RF results.

I worked nearly 16000 stations in poor conditions at ZK2V 2009 – my target is 40000+ this time – hopefully with better conditions and a longer DXpedition. My friend Keith GM4YXI / GM5X is joining me for the first 2 weeks of the DXpedition and is hoping to be QRV as ZK2X in the CQ WW SSB contest – Single-Operator All-Band.

We have arrived safely and are installing antennas. So far we have only 40m and 20m antennas, but tomorrow we should be on several more bands. We are aware that conditions on 15/12/10m are very good, so are working as fast as possible to get on these bands. We hope to install some LF antennas on Tuesday or Wednesday. It is hot, has been raining a lot today and there are many mozzies. We have had some good pile-ups on 15m using the 40m vertical as a temporary antenna !

Keith GM4YXI / GM5X has been issued with the callsign ZK2X, so look for ZK2V Chris or ZK2X Keith (ZK2X = next 2 weeks only, including CQ WW SSB, SOAB Unassisted)

We are very disappointed that internet access is poor – WiFi signals are very weak in the shack, so we may not be able to use our new ‘real-time’ logging system. We will try to sort this but it may not be possible to improve signal strengths. However we will do daily online-log check uploads and LoTW uploads for ZK2V.

We are experiencing some delays installing antennas. Activity has been sporadic in the first 48 hours, but we hope to spend more time operating soon.

Keith has been active using his ZK2X callsign, working loads of stations on 15m using our 40m vertical. We spent most of today working on antennas, with some frustrating delays and set-backs, which we will overcome. I, ZK2V, have been active on CW, but only for an hour or two on 20m and 15m.

Message from Chris, ZK2V

Today (4th Nov) is Keith ZK2X’s last day of operation. He has made 12000 QSOs in his two weeks on the island, including 4600 QSOs in CQ WW SSB.

Chris ZK2V will continue operations until 20th December approx, which should give many stations the opportunity to work Niue.

160m has been poor so far, 80m is improving and 15/12/10m have been excellent, with many long openings into Europe.
