SE100SAF Vaxholm Costal Radio SAF 100 years
Vaxholm radio SAF was the first coast radio station in the Stockholm area that opened in 1914 for naval and merchant marine radio communications, a joint venture project. In 1938 it became the coast radio station of the of the Royal Swedish Navy CNO. SAF was situated on Vaxholmen, a small island between Vaxholm city and Rindö island. It was located at "Vaxholms Kastell", i.e. Vaxholm's citadel that was a part of Vaxholm fortress. The fortress was strategically positioned in the inlet to Stockholm to protect the capital against foreign invasion. The equipment consisted of an 8 kW spark transmitter for longwave telegraphy with the antenna between Vaxholmen and Rindö. In 1919 it was modernized with equipment for telephony; it closed in the 1970s.
