GB2MWT

GB2MWT (Mount Wise Telegraph) is a Special Event Station being held at Plymouth, Devon, England. The site of operation will be from the grounds of Admiralty House, Mount Wise and will be the only activation from this site as it is subject to redevelopment in the New Year.

The weather still isn't good but I have made the decision to run this event next week i.e. 1st December until the 4th December 2009. Operation will continue over this period subject to any problems arising due to conditions.

This event commemorates the fact that it is over 200yrs since the shutter telegraph first operated at this site. [Please also see details for GB1TT, GB1WT,GB2CT and GB2BST which relate to other shutter telegraph stations] - Collect a set of these QSL cards!

During the Napoleonic wars the Mount Wise Shutter Telegraph was one of a number that operated as a communication link between ships in the sound and the Admiralty in London.

There was already a system in place between London and Portsmouth and in 1805 a line was started to connect with Plymouth. The exact date of when the work as completed isn't known, but is believed to be soon after 4th May 1806, as there is a report on this date stating the line was almost ready. There is more information on the shutter telegraph at the Royal Signals Museum in Blandford, Dorset.
