Historians agree that bishopric in Kujawy Region with its capital in Włocławek was founded at the turn of 11-th and 12-th centuries. Ourknowledge about first cathedral church in Włocławek is really very poor.
Most probably St. Jura's wooden church which was later changed toAssunption of Virgin Mary's church served as a cathedral those days. In thetimes of Bishop Michał Godzięba (1223 - 1252) the brick cathedral was built.
Seven years after the consecration, in 1329, the temple and the whole citywere destroyed by the Teutonians. This damaged temple has never beenrebuilt, but in 1340 the buiding of present cathedral church began. 13-th May 1411 was the date when the cornerstone was laid by the bishop Maciej of Gołańcza (1323 - 1364). After 71 years on Monday 13-th May 1411 the new temple was consecrated with Te Deum for the victory of Grunwald, where Teutonic knights were defeated. King Władysław Jagiełło (1351 - 1434) appeared in Włocławek to honour the city with his presence at this memorable moment.
