UPDATE: 26 December 2011

The weather forecast has deteriorated with winds now forecast at upwards of 40 MPH for Wednesday through Friday. We are awaiting for an updated forecast on Monday from the OIC for Sable Island and Maritime Air on possibility for flight to Sable Island this week. Continue to monitor this website for the latest updates.

UPDATE

We will depart from Raleigh, NC at 6:00 am (about 8 hours from now) on Tuesday and will arrive in Halifax around 12 noon. The plan is to transport our equipment to Maritime Air to be weighed, to be sure that we do not exceed the allowable weight limits for a safe take off. We also plan to purchase a few food supplies and water. After that, we will await weather conditions to improve sufficient to allow for the flight on Wednesday. DELAYED

No Flight Today - The “beach runway” is covered with water. The OIC on Sable is assessing the beach, looking for a dry location to land. The advantage of the Britten-Norman Islander plane is that it only requires a short runway for landing. Assuming that a dry area can be identified on the beach, we will make another attempt on Friday.

CANCELLED

The “beach runway” still has standing water. A Friday landing is not possible. Due to the uncertainty of when the runway will be suitable for landing, we decided to delay the dxpedition and return to the US. We will announce any future dates via the various DX bulletins. We are obviously disappointed, but have come to recognize that there is no perfect time to attempt travel to Sable Island.

UPDATE

We are in the process of rescheduling the CY0 operation. Our business schedules will dictate, in part, when we can make another attempt. The goal is to select a time after the winter weather conditions to increase the certainty next time of being able to travel to Sable Island without delay from a winter storm.

Once a date as been confirmed with the Sable Island station, we plan to recruit a CW operator, with dxpedition or contest experience, to “round out” the team. With improving propagation conditions, the band conditions will provide more opportunity than two operators can satisfy.

The plan is for:

1st Operator – WA4DAN – 70% SSB, 30% CW
2nd Operator – AA4VK – 100% SSB
3rd Operator – ______ – 70% CW, 30% SSB
