An emerging new country Kurdistan?
Yesterday, Iraqi Kurdish President Massoud Barzani announced in an interview with CNN’s Christian Amanpour that his region is considering seeking formal independence from Iraq. “Iraq is obviously falling apart” he told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour. “And it’s obvious that the federal or central government has lost control over everything. Everything is collapsing-the army, the troops, the police”. President Barzani added “The time is here for the Kurdistan people to determine their future”.
Independence has long been a dream of the Kurdish people. The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) governs the autonomous region of Kurdistan located in the Northeastern region of Iran adjacent to Turkey and Iran.
The KRG was the host government of the very successful April 2010 YI9PSE Dxpedition from Erbil, Kurdistan Iraq. This was the first Amateur Radio activity from the Kurdish Region. The YI9PSE Dxpedition Team demonstrated amateur radio to the Kurdish Regional Government. They were very intrigued by the demonstration and asked many good questions.
I’m very interested in the possibility of independence for the Kurds. I have long anticipated this announcement. We made many Kurd friendships during our 14 days in Kurdistan.
If Kurdistan is able to gain independence and admission as a UN member state, they will meet the requirements for a new DXCC entity in the ARRL’s DXCC program.
If that happens-and we hope that it does, the Intrepid-DX Group will return to Erbil, Kurdistan for another activation, this time from the new country of Kurdistan.
In addition, just as we have done in other new countries such as South Sudan, we will provide the Kurdistan Government with a complete frame work of amateur radio and we will assist them in applying for their ITU prefix.
We will continue to follow the Kurdish progress towards independence and the Intrepid-DX Group will converge in Erbil, Kurdistan at the appropriate time to activate this new country.
