HG25PANEU 25th anniversary of the Pan-European Picnic - 1989

HG25PANEU is a special amateur radio station run by the Amateur Radio Club of Sopron, Hungary (HA1KSS). Our goal is to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Pan-European Picnic and Border Breakthrough near Sopron at the Austro-Hungarian border on 8/19/1989, when, during a friendly reunion and peace demonstration between neighbouring Austrian and Hungarian villages, hundreds of GDR-refugees broke through the temporarily opened border and fled to Austria and West Germany. During August and September 2014, HG25PANEU will operate in various modes from various historical sites of the former Iron Curtain — incl. the exact time and place the historic breakthrough of hundreds of Eastern German people happened 25 years ago. From the site, we plan to set up a radiobridge between different points of the Iron Courtain. In connection with the special activity, a memorial QSL-card will be issued by the Amateur Radio Club of Sopron for amateur radio operators and SWLs confirming contacts with HG25PANEU. Nowadays, Hungary is proud member of the European Community, but still: we, the Team of HG25PANEU believe, that it is needed to stop for a moment (or, if you wish, for a QSO) and remember those contributed in tearing down the Iron Curtain between East and West and thus made the first steps towards a Free and United Europe.
