To remember those troups send bij Dutch government 35 years ago, on a peace mission in the Lebanon. The United Nations asked the Dutch Government on January 18 1979 formally for a mechanized infantry battalion for UNIFIL. The Council of Ministers agree with that on January 19 1979. The department of defense told the 44th mechanized infantery batallion "johan willem friso" in Zuidlaren, since 1965 available fot UN tasks, to prepare. The Council of Ministers decided on June 20 1983 to end the contribution to UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon) per October 19 1983, simply because UNIFIL (especially after the Israeli invasion of the previous year) could not carry out its tasks properly. Under heavy international pressure from the United Nations, a number of Arab countries, and especially the Americans, the Council of Ministers at the last minute, came back on their decision to withdraw the support to UNIFIL. The Dutch Government still maintained a company (Dutch Infantry Company: Dutchcoy) in Lebanon. The Dutch Government decided on October 4, 1985 to withdraw completely. In January 1986, Dutchbatt was rewarded with the Wateler peace prize 1985 from the Carnegie Foundation for its efforts. In March 1981 Dutchbatt already received the Prince Maurice Medal of the Royal Dutch Association ' our army ', and also the bronze Shield of the Commander of the land forces on October 21, 1983.
