Empress of Ireland Sinking of 1914 Special Event Station. On May 29, 1914, the Empress of Ireland collided with the Storstad, a Norweigan Freighter, in the St Lawrence River during heavy fog. 14 minutes after the collision, the Empress of Ireland slid beneath the water, taking 1012 of the 1477 souls onboard. Only 7 lifeboats were able to be launched during the sinking, as the Empress capsized quickly after the collision. Due to rescue efforts of the SS Storstad, many of the survivors that were rescued were rescued from the icy waters of the St. Lawrence. Nathan, KC9HYY will be active as KC9HYY/EOI (Empress of Ireland) from May 25 2015 0000 UTC to June 2 2015 2359 UTC. Operations will be conducted on his spare time when not working. Please look for Nathan on bands 10m-40m operating SSB and various modes of digital, including PSK31, RTTY and JT65. All QSL's should be postmarked prior to July 1, 2015 for a guranteed response. Cards will be order the middle of July, and anything postmarked after July 1 will be responded to in the order it was receieved until supplies last.
