S. Darius and S. Gir?nas airfield was founded in 1915 and is one of the oldest functioning airfields in Europe and the oldest in Lithuania. This place has rich history associated with the most of Europe countries and United States of America. In 1918, when Lithuania gained its independence, S. Darius and S. Gir?nas airfield was the cradle of all Lithuania’s civil and military aviation. The airfield gave birth to the innovative avia techniques marked in history of Europe: Antanas Gustaitis, Jurgis Dobkevi?ius. This is the place where people waited for pilots Steponas Darius and Stasys Gir?nas to land after their legendary flight over Atlantic Ocean which began in Floyd Bennett Field in New York on July 15, 1933. At the time when S. Darius and S. Gir?nas airfield was a national airport, it was the place from where all the international flights for diplomatic meetings took place. In its rich history it held international aviation events, exhibitions, air shows. Presently, S. Darius and S. Gir?nas airfield services the biggest part of general aviation flights across Lithuania. In this airfield located in Kaunas city, operates 30 aviation organizations and military search and rescue department (KOP). S. Darius and S. Gir?nas airfield is marked as a national treasure, protected by the government and is included in the list of “Best flying destination in Europe”. In 2015 S. Darius and S. Gir?nas airfield will be celebrating 100 years anniversary. Due to this event, on July 25-26, 2015 in S. Darius and S. Gir?nas airfield, international air show will take place.
