The special callsign marks the 60th Anniversary of the Northern Cross Radio Telescope, one of the largest transit radio telescopes in the world. Gianfranco Sinigaglia (I4BBE, SK), after whom the Bologna ARI Section is named, was a professor of radioastronomy and applied electronics at the Physics Institute of Bologna University, and responsible for the electronics of the Northern Cross.
