ZS8 Marion Island activation April 2013 to May 2014

I have just been notified by ZS1BCE David; he has been appointed as the new radio technician for Marion Island from April 2013 until May 2014.

David departs Cape Town on 15 April 2013 and will only be active once the ship departs with the old team about 4 weeks later. He will be active on most HF bands; SSB only.

David returns to Marion Island for the second time, but a first as a radio amateur. He conducted a tour of duty as a radio operator in 1995 / 1996 as part of the Marion M52 Team.

No call sign has been applied for yet, but David wishes to apply for ZS8D. More details to follow once the call sign has been allocated.

His QSL manager will be Pierre Tromp ZS1HF / ZS8M

UPDATE- second operator to be active from Marion island

Pierre, ZS1HF informs that Carson ZR6CWI has been appointed as the Space Weather Engineer at Marion Island from April 2013 to May 2014. Carson has just completed a one year work assignment at the SANAE Antarctic Base and will be arriving back in Cape Town on 19 Feb 2013. He informed Pierre today that he will be active from Marion Island over this period. No call sign has been allocated yet. His QSL Manager will be ZS1HF / ZS8M. At this stage SSB only. No further info available.

UPDATE #2

Sadly, David ZS1BCE has not been appointed as the radio technician to join the team going down to Marion Island this year.
At this stage ZR6CWI Carson Mc Afee has been appointed as the Space Weather Engineer and will spend a year on the island. He has appointed me as his QSL Manager and informs me that he will be active from May 2013 to April 2014. No call sign has been allocated yet and at this stage he will operate SSB only. Once he returns to Cape Town and I have had time to discuss his operating and equipment requirements, I will supply more info. Until then no more info is available.
Carson has just completed a year at the SANAE Antarctic Base.
