60th Anniversary of North Sea Floods
On 31st January/1st February 1953 a combination of high tides and a severe weather system caused extensive flooding in Britain, the Netherlands and Belgium along with over 2000 deaths. The role of Amateur Radio in supporting the emergency response has been well recorded and in Britain at least, the response led to the official recognition of Amateur Radio as a resource in disasters and emergencies and the setting up of an amateur radio emergency group in that country.
On the 60th anniversary of the floods, two stations are active in Britain and the Netherlands to mark the event and maintain public awareness of the role of amateur radio in an emergency.
PA60WNR will be operating from the Watersnoodmuseum in Ouwerkerk near Zierikzee in the province of Zeeland from 0800 to 1600UTC on Saturday 2nd February . Operations will be on 80 and 40m in CW and SSB. Their target frequencies are
80 mtr SSB 3700 KHz ± QRM
80 mtr CW 3555 KHz ± QRM
40 mtr SSB 7080 KHz ± QRM
40 mtr CW 7040 KHz ± QRM
In Britain, East Suffolk RAYNET will be operating from the town of Felixstowe using the callsign G7SCR from around 1000UTC on Saturday 2nd February. They expect to operate around 3663 and 7090kHz.
The media are concentrating on the great improvements made in flood defences to avoid this kind of disaster happening again, the two stations will hopefully show that amateur radio is still ready to assist in times of disaster, whatever the cause.
