When St George heard that a young Princess had been offered to the dragon he took it upon himself to do battle with the dragon and in turn slayed the dragon and rescued the Princess. In 1222 the Council of Oxford declared April 23rd to be St George's day, and in the 14th Century St George replaced St Edmund the Martyr as Englands patron St. So who was St George. Although St George is the Patron Saint of England he was actually born in Cappadocia now known as Eastern Turkey in the year A.D.270. At the age of 17 he joined the Roman army and served under a pagan Emperor, he soon became renowned for his bravery and even though he served under a pagan Emperor he never forgot his Christian faith. When the Emperor Diocletian started persecuting Christians, St George pleaded for the lives of the Christians to be spared, however his pleas fell on deaf ears and it is thought that the Emperor tortured St George trying to make him deny his faith, however he stayed strong and faithful showing incredible courage. Eventually St George was beheaded in Palestine on 23rd April A.D 303. Patron Saint St George is not only the Patron saint of England but also Palestine, Moscow, Lithuania and Greece just to name few.
